Core Competency

This came across my email from our Executive Director and it really has my mind racing (in a good way).

Core Competency:  A unique ability that a company acquires from its founders or develops and that cannot be easily imitated. Core competencies are what give a company one or more competitive advantages, in creating and delivering value to its customers in its chosen field. Also called core capabilities or distinctive competencies.

Too often I think companies waste time doing things that aren’t really their strong suit. What if companies and agencies knew what their core competency was and headed towards that with full passion? Leaving behind all of the time wasting and wheel spinning.

BTW…my favorite part from the definition is “cannot be easily imitated”.

  1. Still later, Amazon went into business as a cloud computing provider. That, too, seemed to be outside Amazon’s core competency — Amazon is a retailer, not an IT vendor. And yet, Amazon seems to be making it work.

    1. Great thought Louis but it seems to me that since they are giving away 2 free gigs of cloud space, they are really hoping to sell the extra space to people who move everything to their cloud system. Which would in fact, put them right back into retailer mode
